There's Something About Jane
More than 200 years after her death Jane Austen is more popular than ever. Her novels are still read, discussed and obsessed over by millions all over the world, myself included. As for the movies and TV Adaptions based on her novels, they just keep coming with audiences lapping it up.
I find this rather amazing when considering she wrote only six complete novels. Jane Austen's novels are not page-turners by modern standards. Her novels revolve around simple things and ordinary events.
For me, part of Jane's genius lies in her keen eye for detail and her observation of people. The way she describes her characters reveals an instinctive knowledge of the human psyche and motivations which would put many modern psychologists to shame.
Small things populate her novels, but these things were described in such minute detail, bringing the scene and the world she was creating to life for her readers in a way many writers would envy, even today.
Jane does this so well that when many people think of the Regency Era they are likely to think of this time as it is depicted in Miss Austen's celebrated novels. Not bad going for a country parson's daughter who only completed six novels in her short life!
